"On weekends and holidays we travel and see other parts of Denmark. We rent cars, hitch-hike or go by bus or train. It's very easy. This autumn break we are going to Norway."

- Peter Szabo, Hungary

Housing Benefit / Loans / Deposits

VIA has previously notified all international students about the lack of opportunities to apply for housing benefits in housing associations in Denmark. The situation has, however, changed once again. The State Administration and the Danish Immigration Service have notified us that there is a difference between the opportunities for EU/EEA citizens and the opportunities for non EU/EEA citizens.

Rules in force for international students with a citizenship in an EU/EEA country:

These students can apply for and receive “housing benefits” = a subsidy for rent from the municipality according to the rules in force at the time. These students can still not receive:

  • A housing loan
  • A deposit for private rooms and apartments

If EU/EEA citizens apply for housing loans, it may lead to cancellation of their residence permit and, thereby, a termination of their study period in Denmark. If EU/EEA citizens apply for deposits, it will lead to a cancellation of their residence permit and termination of the study period in Denmark according to Danish law.

Rules in force for international students without a citizenship in an EU/EEA country:

Non EU/EEA citizens can still not receive:

  • Housing benefits
  • A housing loan
  • A deposit for private rooms and apartments

If non EU/EEA citizens apply for housing benefits or housing loans, it may lead to a cancellation of their residence permit and, thereby, a termination of their study period in Denmark. If these students apply for deposits, it will lead to a cancellation of the residence permit and termination of the study period in Denmark according to Danish law.

Therefore, we strongly advise all our international students without a citizenship in an EU/EEA country not to apply for housing benefits, housing loans and deposits for private rooms and apartments from the local authority.
