A Different Style of Teaching

At VIA University College, as in Denmark in general, we have a different teaching style than in most of the world. The basic principle of this is that the student has a wide responsibility for his or her own education. We emphasise the contact between the staff and the student, and this manifests itself in the way we communicate in the classroom. We do not practise one-way communication, where the teacher is lecturing to an audience of patiently listening and silent students. The students are expected to ask qualified questions and overall there is an exchange of ideas and knowledge, which everyone benefits from. This may be a challenge to students unaccustomed to this style of teaching, however, if the students can meet the demands, they will acquire more experience, more daring and as a result not only be more valuable to future employers, who expect similar communication skills, but also grow as individuals.

The students attending VIA University College will be involved in project work, have practical training and interact with the teachers and other students - all to improve their qualifications. Future employers, whether a private company or a public institution, put a high premium on these qualifications, as already, as during their study periods, our students have already gained “hands-on” experience with how things are conducted in “real life”.
