Who are we?

On 1 January 2008, the Mid-West Centre for Higher Education, the Vitus Bering Denmark, the Vita Centre for Higher Education, the Alpha Centre for Higher Education and the University College Jutland entered a merger – covering more than 25 study programmes as well as Higher Preparatory Examination (HF) and Higher Technical Examination (HTX).

Organisational structure:

VIA UC has been organised on the basis of two principles. The study programmes are joined in Faculties: The Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Education and Social Studies, School of Technology and Business and the Faculty of Performing Arts.
Across these Faculties, the organisation includes: the Division of Continuing Education and the Division of Research and Development as well as a number of administrative departments.

The Libraries have been placed in the Division of Research and Development with a Director of Libraries who is part of the Management of the Division of Research and Development. Under the Director there are five regional Managers of Libraries.

Staff and places of service:

44 librarians, 10 library assistants and 8 commercial and clerical employees as well as shelving staff.

VIA Libraries have 21 ”own” places of service as well as 3 driven in cooperation with institutions outside VIA.

Future profile/vision

”The libraries will contribute to the development strategy of VIA until the end of 2009 with e.g. the following areas of action:

  • There will be libraries at all the places where VIA provides study programmes. 
  • A continued development of the information qualifications of the students shall be incorporated in all curricula as a progressively arranged course of study emphasizing the importance of the professions. 
  • Implementation of the most recent research results in the study programmes by taking out licences on international research results, securing easy access from the virtual platforms on the Intranet and Internet as well as planning educational facilities and guidance in the use of these. 
  • Introduce the benchmark tool RefWorks as standard for teachers and students. 
  • Cooperate with VIA’s knowledge centres on the knowledge foundation, systematic monitoring of new literature and research results of the centres as well documentation and communication by the centres of their knowledge production. 
  • Implementation of PURE.”
